The Armed Forces Reserve Center in Pinellas Park, Fla.was named First Runner Up in the Heavy Commercial category of the ICF Builder Awards.

Judges cited the size and architecture of the building, as well as the fact that it was the first large military application of ICF technology in the award presentation.

Insulating concrete forms (ICFs) are hollow foam blocks which are stacked and then filled with steel-reinforced concrete.  The finished structure combines the strength of concrete with the insulating properties of foam.  Available in several brands, this building used the iForm from Reward Wall Systems.

The reserve center consists of a main training building, as well as storage and vehicle maintenance areas, and is the largest of its kind in the state.

Since the terrorist attacks of 2001, the federal government has mandated that all military buildings must have built-in force protection, the ability to withstand hurricanes, explosives, and other impacts.  ICFs were the most cost-effective way to achieve this.  As an additional benefit, they are extremely energy efficiency and a popular “green building” material.
